The Prelude Exhibition of The First Shanghai Graphic Design Biennale – TopoPoster: International Poster Design Exhibition, after six months (June – December, 2025) of planning and preparation, was successfully held from December 13 to December 22, 2025. As one of the larger-scale exhibitions in recent years featuring an international selection of works in China, it showcased over 300 representative poster designs from 153 influential contemporary designers and studios active in the forefront of the field across 28 countries.
Klangwiederholungen (Sound Repetitions)
The poster was created through a layered process, combining multiple prints on baking paper with scanned elements. These were assembled into a layout in Illustrator, retouched in Photoshop, and enhanced using Type Generator for the museum’s symbol. The final work was screen printed in A1 format.
The poster was designed for an event that brought together two artists exploring sound and music in motion through unconventional instruments. To reflect this, I deliberately blended digital and tangible media, creating a visual language that mirrors the experimental nature of their practice. The composition is divided into two parts to symbolize the two artists, while the use of layered lines evokes the complexity of sound and recalls the structure of musical scores. Muted, aged colors were chosen to underline the underground, nontraditional character of their work. The integration of the Zeughaus Teufen symbol connects the poster to the museum’s broader themes, inviting viewers to reflect on form and function here, in relation to the instruments themselves.
